BROADBAND Global Area Network (BGAN) is the only mobile satellite service to offer broadband data with simultaneous voice calls, through a single, truly portable device on a global basis. It consists of a BGAN terminal, which is compact and lightweight. Standard terminals can be carried as easily as a laptop, with the smallest weighing less than 1 kg. Vehicular systems are equally compact and have a discreet tracking antenna for the car roof and an interior transceiver. The company claims that BGAN is the first service to offer guaranteed data rates on demand - up to 256KBps -for live video and video-conferencing. Broadband data up to 0.5MBps and background IP are also offered; if a customer wants streaming, they can have that too. They can get simultaneous voice calls as well as being able to text and fax. Like a mobile phone, the cost is per use - per minute for voice calls and per megabyte for broadband access.
