This time I will deal with semaphore signal lamps. Many years ago I made some 'Upper Quadrant' signals. These were 1:8 full-size and for the lamps I used 14-volt LED bulbs with a coloured Perspex lens in the spectacle plate. Whilst these worked they did not really look correct and at the time I wondered if small oil lamps could be made to work. There is a minimum size of flame that can be obtained, and an even larger minimum size for a luminous (excess carbon) flame.
