Following the successful introduction of the Royal Scots in 1927, the LMS locomotive department turned its attention to improving the Claughtons. This latter class of locomotives consisted of one hundred and thirty LNWR designed 4-6-0s. Since their introduction in 1912, the Claughtons had been the flagship express passenger locomotive of the 'Premier Line' and, until the introduction of the Royal Scots, used on the fastest and heaviest trains. Tenders most commonly seen behind the Patriots were a development of a Midland Railway design dating back to 1911. By the early 1930s, these tenders had become a standard LMS item and at the time of constructing the model, information concerning them was (unlike that of the locomotives) available and comprehensive. This was due to several having avoided the cutter's torch. As a collective group these survivors carried many variations. I made the journey to Bridgenorth on the Severn Valley Railway to find a coal-rail fitted example coupled to Stanier Mogul 42968. This tender was conveniently positioned adjacent to the footbridge, from where I was able to photograph details of the coal space interior and also the rivet patterns on the side plates of the water tank (photo 141).
