摘要

Today, when soil scientists celebrate the birthday of Viktor Abramovich Kovda, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, an outstanding scientist, it is appropriate to mention that he paid much attention to the effect of salts on agricultural crops. As early as 1937 [1], based on the profound and thorough analysis of literature, he arrived at the conclusion that one of the main plant-damaging effects of salts is the disturbance of water supply to the cell, because the osmotic pressure (P)in soil solution is higher than in the cell (physiological drought) [2, 3]. Later on, he noted that "only a few papers on this subject appeared after our book," and many aspects of the problem remained unstudied. This prompted us to return to this problem 50 years later, because soil salinization not only did not stop, but it continuously expands its area (in particular, this process is strongly developed in urban soils of the humid zone).
