High-quality forests of English oak and Siberian elm were grown in mesodepressions of the semideseit zone of the Northern Caspian Plain (the Dzhanybek experimental ground of the Russian Academy of Sciences) Mesodepressions are closed rounded lowlandsor depressions, 1 to 1,5 m deep, with an area of dozens to hundreds of hectares Once eveiy few years the lowlands are flooded with melt waters that wet the soils down to the groundwater table. The natural conditions here favor the development of plant associations with prevalence of common tipchak, Lessing kovyls, and tyrsa with an admixture of steppe motley grasses, Chernozem-like soils that form here are characterized by distinct humus-accumulative and carbonate horizons and, according to the generally accepted classification, are considered most similar to meadow chestnut soils. The plain between the lowlands is occupied by solonetz-complex soils: solonchak, light chestnut, and dark soils, At 5-7 m under the depressions there are lenses of fresh groundwater available to the roots of arboreal plants, which makes it possible to grow valuable forest crops despite local semidesert conditions.
