摘要

In the past 10-15 years fires on drained low moor peatlands were widespread on vast areas of taiga and forest-steppe zones [1]. Fires cause particularly great damage to soils of Poles'e landscapes where a relatively thin peat layer (1-2 m) is underlain with a horizon of intensely gleyed barren quartz sand. Usually such soils are burnt down entirely from the day surface to the mineral bottom of marshes or to groundwater. Here lies the difference between the consequences of fires on drained peatlands and those on natural marshes: in the profile of the latter groundwater stays shallow under the day surface even in the low-water period in summer and protects the organic strata (below the water table) from complete destruction. After a fire, potentiallyfertile peat soils are replaced by secondary pyrogenic horizons and fire-altered peat soils. Today fires on drained peat soils are brought about not only by summer droughts, but primarily because two-way control of groundwater level cannot be effected in drainage systems, as very many pumping stations of these systems are out of service. At present virtually all drained lands in Russia are in a real danger of peat soil burnout.
