The content of humus is one of the basic soil properties responsible for the fertility and productivity of soils in an agricultural landscape. Agricultural chemistry and reclamation measures are oriented to the maintenance and replenishment of humus reserves in soils. The efficiency of these measures essentially rises when the spatial and temporal patterns of the content of humus in soils are known and taken into account. This paper presents data obtained in studying the time-space variability of humus content in various soil types of the agricultural landscapes of the Tula region. Investigations of arable soils were complemented by studies of layland soils.
