摘要

The soil cover of the central and southern parts of the Russian Plain has a characteristic feature, which was interpreted by A. A. Velichko as remnants of the periglacial stage in the paleogeographic evolution of the area [1]. It is identified as alternating gray brown and darker, usually gray, spots on a recently tilled cropland. These alternating spots correspond to the complex pattern of the soil cover and the difference in color between the subarable horizons, which are involved into the plow layer in the course of plowing. Light-colored plots are those where the arable horizon is directly underlain by B or ELB horizons. Dark plots indicate sites with a deep humus-accumulative horizon whose thickness exceeds the depth of tillage, and the arablehorizon is underlain by a dark humus-enriched horizon, which is usually named second humus horizon, or SHH. There are many opinions on the origin and age of soils with the SHH [1-11]. However, the majority of pedologists believe that these soils were formed in the low elements of the cryogenic paleorelief, namely, in the thermokarst depressions and hollows that evolved in places of cryogenic fissuring in the course of permafrost degradation.
