In the last decades, the anthropogenic load on soil ecosystems of Western Siberia has increased because of oil spills and discharges of oil-contaminated wastewater. The Surgut region (Khanty-Mansi autonomous district) continues to hold the first placeamong the regions suffering from technogenic catastrophes related to oil and oil-product spills. One of the main reasons for the high accident rate is the use of old unreliable equipment. Bog ecosystems are predominant in this region, and the strong contamination by oil can significantly affect the physicochemical and microbiological properties of peatbogs and peat soils. The natural remediation of the original bog biocenoses will take tens of years. In the Surgut region, more than 90% of the area, strongly disturbed because of oil spills, requires intense remediation aimed at restoring the fertility of soil and original phytocenoses. Therefore, although changes in the chemical properties of different soils subjected to oil contamination were thoroughly investigated, the study of oil-contaminated peat soils predominant in the Surgut region is essential for successful remediation after oil spills.
