The estimated rise of the global surface temperature during the course of the 21' century willhave regionally varying impacts. Urban areas which are differentiated from their rural surround-ings by severe surface sealing, poor air quality and high population density are not only sensi-tive to global warming but also they are major net sources of anthropogenic CO_2. This paperreviews likely impacts of global warming on urban climate and discusses potential mitigationand adaptation strategies as a case study for the Ruhr area, Germany.
