Extra tropical cyclone Klaus hit southern France and northern Spain on January 23~(th)and 24~(th)2009, causing severe damage to forests in its path. The extreme gust wind speeds reached up to198 km/h in Galicia (NW Spain), the most productive forestry region of Spain. In this area, thewind destroyed about 1.2 million cubic meters of wood, approximately 25% of the region an-nual harvest. The storm also affected the thinning trials established by the Sustainable ForestManagement Unit (UXFS) for the four major commercial conifers in Galicia (Pinus radiata D.Don, Pinus pinaster Ait., Pinus sylvestris L. and Pseudatsuga menziesii Mirb. Franco). To assess the susceptibility of forests to wind damage, as affected by the stand and tree charac-teristics and management, becomes extremely important to face the predicted increase on thefrequency of extreme weather events under climate change. This study evaluates the damageproduced on each of those trials and the causes of the differences among them and compares theeffect of the different treatments carried out in the plots (heavy thinning from below, light thin-ning from below, mixed thinning with crop tree designation and control without thinning) on theoccurrence of wind damage during storms. The data collected is analyzed to determine the treecharacteristics (diameter at breast height, crown size, total height, slenderness ratio and Hart-Becking index) more relevant to windthrow susceptibility.
