Long-term microclimate experience in urban public spacesin The Netherlands

Outdoor thermal comfort is not only determined by the factual microclimate, but also by theperception of it- and this might not always be congruent with reality. This is crucial becauseperceptions, rather than the exact real situation stir the acceptance or avoidance of outdoor ur-ban places. Especially for urban designers it is very important to acquire knowledge on thesemicroclimate perceptions to eventually be able to design places in response to people's needsand perceptions. Two main questions need to be answered: what are mechanisms stirring thelong-term microclimate perceptions of people and what are the spatial factors in the urban builtenvironment influencing microclimate perception? To investigate this, a research was conductedin Dutch urban public spaces combining interview series and microclimate measurements. Thisstudy firstly revealed that people's long-term microclimate experience is predominantly basedon more extreme microclimate situations and secondly that people assign microclimate proper-ties to certain spatial configurations. The first result on the microclimate situations is useful formicroclimate simulations applied in design processes and the second result on the spatial con-figurations preferred or avoided for their microclimate can be directly translated into designguidelines.
