Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi form association with a vast number of plant species, thereby playing a very important role in plant nutrient uptake and survival. Mycorrhizal fungi contribute to plant growth and stress tolerance by a symbiotic relationship, thus forming a beneficial component of soil microbial community (Sylvia and Williams 1992). Besides increasing nutrient uptake, mycorrhizal association also increases a plant's tolerance to environmental stresses like drought (Malajczuk, Reddell, and Brundrett 1994), salinity (Azcon and El-Atrash 1997), and presence of heavy metals Qones and Hutchinson 1988).
