Richard W.G. Dennis, former head of mycology at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and one of the most eminent and influential mycologists in Britain, died in June at the age of 92. During his career, spanning almost 70 years, he made substantial and lasting contributions to the study of fungal taxonomy as well as to plant pathology, covering all major groups of fungi from the tropics to the poles. His seminal research, often based on extensive and pioneering field work in many areas of the world, have formed the basis for our understanding of the systematics of many major groups, particularly among the discomycetes, and will continue to remain standard works for years to come.
