Saplings of P. densiflora were grown using an air-layering procedure which produced roots without mycorrhizal infection. The plants successfully formed ectomycorrhizal roots when planted in clay pots containing inocula of L. shimeji mycelia. Light and EM observation of the mycorrhizas showed a hyphal mantle covering the root surface, Hartig nets in the intercellular spaces of the root cortex, and starch grains accumulated in the cells of the vascular cylinder of the roots. Mycelia isolated from themycorrhizas and incubated for c. 2 months in pure culture formed fruiting bodies of L. shimeji. Ten months after inoculation, fruiting bodies of L. shimeji formed in a pot with an air layered P. densiflora sapling.
