Zoospores of 6 species of Phytophthora, 2 species of Pythium, Saprolegnia diclina and Peronophythora litchii were investigated for orientation, extent and possible connection of the anterior roots of the flagellar apparatus. The anterior ribbed rootextended from the right side of the kinetosome to the anterior end of the cell where it arched to the left and extended back towards the centre of the cell. The anterior doublet root extended from the left side of the kinetosome and continued under thecell membrane on either the left or right side of the flagellar groove. Although the 2 roots appeared to overlap from some angles, they were separate and did not connect. TEM revealed that the zoospores of P. litchii were cytologically similar to zoospores in the Pythiaceae and Peronosporaceae.
