When is a single slide preparation never 1 slide? When it is reviewed on an image-assisted screening device. This is the "new math" of image-assisted workload recording. On July 27, 2010, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released an alert clarifying workload recording for semiautomated gynecologic cytology screening devices. The alert specifically assigns a "value" of 0.5 for any slide that is reviewed on an image-assisted screening device using fields of view (FOV) only. When a manual review is necessary, the slide is assigned a full slide "value". Therefore, those slides that undergo evaluation using only FOV are considered half (0.5) of a slide, whereas those slides that undergo FOV examination plus manual review are considered 1.5 slides. One slide never equals 1 when reviewed with image assistance.
