Alarm bells have been sounding ever more shrilly at the European Commission about the collapse in industrial production in the EU, suggesting that existing government bail-out plans may prove grossly inadequate. Factory production in Euroland fell year-on -year by a record 12% in December, with car and truck output leading the way, leading to dire knock-on effects in sheet steel orders and among component manufacturers. The old trade-based adage about the rest of the world catching pneumonia when the US gets a cold does not look dead and buried after all. Japan's GDP fell by over 3% in 4Q08 and the Euro area's by 1.5%, compared with the US' 1%, while Russia shocked economic commentators by disclosing that its industrial production plummeted by 20% in January.
