Organizations can't be ahead of customers; they can only anticipate their next move. And KM is a key portal into market mood swings. But here, Ganesh Natarajan explains how KM practitioners have only scratched the surface of what's possible. By methodically going through a stage-by-stage evolutionary process, an organization can build a model to measure KM maturity to gain a more secure foothold in the marketplace. KM is an important capability in an organization's arsenal, but it has been one of the least scientific approaches with an absence of proper methodologies for assessment, application or implementation. It hasn't made its presence felt as a serious management practice. What's missing is a systematic approach to focus on key factors to make KM maturity happen better and faster. This will accelerate the evolution from knowledge being a resource to using it as an enabler to strengthen the organization.
