TRIZ is a Russian acronym. It stands for Teoriya Resheniya Izobretatelskikh Zadatch or, the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. The theory was developed by Genrich Altshuller in the 1950s and 60s in the former Soviet Union. Altshuller analyzed hundreds of patents and came to a conclusion that there are some basic principles that govern invention. He came up with 40 inventive principles and developed the ideal final result concept (where an ideal final solution ignores constraints and limitations), physical contradictions and separation principles, and the contradiction matrix. Altshuller concluded that, by using those concepts and principles, anyone can become an inventor. TRIZ suggests that current problems can be solved by using existing solutions applied to the same or analogous problem in the past. Applied as a KM tool, in a process-led environment, you can systematically review previous, databased solutions and apply company-specific principles derived from TRIZ principles to constantly innovate new and better processes. In its essence, TRIZ gives a checklist that will make it easier to generate new ideas. There is no magic to it and many people do it without thinking or knowing of such a discipline. This article sets out to demonstrate what exactly TRIZ is, the concept of TRIZ in KM and how we've implemented and integrated TRIZ at Air Products using four different approaches.
