In vitro studies of antagonistic behaviour of Rhizobium strain against phytopathogenic fungi.

摘要

Rhizobium strain was isolated from the root nodules of Trigonella foenumgraecum from the crop field near Gunupur, Orissa. The pure culture of the bacterium was maintained in the laboratory with Yeast extract-Mannitol (YEM) agar medium. Morphological and biochemical characteristics of the bacterium were studied. Siderophores production by the isolate was tested by Chrome-Azurol S (CAS) assay method. The bacterium was screened for its ability to inhibit against three fungal phytopathogens such as Macrophomina phaseolina, Fusarium oxysporum and Aspergillus niger. The results of the present study indicated that Rhizobium showed antagonistic effect against M. phaseolina and F. oxysporum. Both the phytopathogens were inhibited up to 58% of their growth after 5 days of culture. Scanning Electron Micrograph showed mycelia deformities like hyphal swelling, shriveling and leakage of cytoplasm of both the fungal phytopathogens. Therefore, the present study can be concluded that Rhizobium isolate is an efficient inhibitor of M. phaseolina and F. oxysporum but has no efficacy against Aspergillus niger.
