Praseodymium hexaboride (PrB_6) nanowires have been successfully fabricated for the first time with the self-catalyst method using praseodymium (Pr) powders and boron trichloride (BCl_3) gas mixed with hydrogen and argon. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the compositions, morphologies and structures of the samples. Field-emission measurements on the PrB_6 nanowires showed that a current emission density of 3.3 x 10~4 A cm~(-2) was achieved at a voltage of 1457 V with an effective cmission area as small as 1.2 mu m~2. A growth mechanism on the self-catalyst process is proposed for the formation of the PrB_6 nanostructures.
