When, just over a century ago,Albert Einstein showed that light has discrete, particle-like properties as well as its continuous, wavelike properties, he revolutionized our understanding of optical fields. During the 1980s and 1990s, researchers developed the ability to produce and manipulate light fields that have properties dominated by these quantum mechanical phenomena. Around the same time, quantum information science — the study of the information properties of quantum systems — was also established. The combination of these two developments led to the demonstration of new quantum information protocols with optics — particularly communication protocols — that are superior to classical information protocols in principle.
