Skin and epithelial surfaces of airways and the gastrointestinal tract represent the first line of defense and together constitute the largest immune organ in the body; these surfaces are constantly exposed to microbes. Protection is ensured by the coordinated action of the two arms of the immune system: innate and adaptive immunity. These two arms act through cells, such as macro-phages, dendritic cells (DCs) and lymphocytes, and through effector proteins, such as cytokines and antibodies. Lymphocytes (T cells, B cells, natural killer and natural killer T cells) and their products are under the control of DCs1, which initiate and regulate immune responses.
