Vast changes in gene-expression programs occur as pluripotent progenitor cells differentiate into committed lineages. The dynamic changes in the packaging of the DNA (chro-matin or epigenetic environment) that take place at developmental transitions Instruct' the cell to express the genome in new ways to alter the cell's functional abilities1. Exactly how the cell 'knows' which genes it needs to repackage and into what state to effectively either promote or turn off lineage-specific genes is still being elucidated. Georgopoulos and colleagues provide novel insight into this important question in a new study.
