A unique conodont assemblage dominated by Bipennatus bipennatus montensis (WEDDIGE, 1977) was recovered from the Zachelmie Quarry (Lysogory Region of the Holy Cross Mts.) near the top of the redefined and formally established Wojciechowice Formation. The formation represents the earliest phase of Middle Devonian carbonate platform development, an extensive shallow-water shelf with a flat bottom relief and restricted dolomitic sedimentation. The conodonts allow the age of this intial phase to be constrained to the Eifelian costatus Zone. The transition to the successive coral-stromatoporoid platform phase was diachronous in the Holy Cross Mts. In the Lysogory Region this transition was probably related to the Id eustatic pulse (costatus-australis zones boundary), whereas in the Southern Region it is attributed to the latest Eifelian If transgressive event (kockelianus-ensensis zones boundary). The Bipennatus b. montensis level represents the initial marine incursion into extremely shallow-marine, intermittently exposed dolomitic mud-flats. The conodont subspecies was probably characterised by specialized palaeo-environmental requirements since it preferred not only shallow-water but also low-energy conditions on the sheltered inner shelf.
