摘要

Tortonian limestones of southern central Crete contain a diverse coralline red algal flora with abundant Spongites albanense and Titanoderma pustulatum, various species of Mesophyllum and Lithothamnion as well as species of Lithophyllum and Sporolithon. The application of neonto-logic and morphometric criteria to fossil taxa allowed for a semi-quantitative assessment and identification of red algal associations by means of cluster analysis. The associations reflect a temperature range typical for the temperate to tropical realms and a variety of depth intervals. It is therefore suggested that these associations can be used as a basis for palaeoenvironmental studies in Cenozoic sediments.
