Kangaroo mother care was begun in Bogota in the late 1970s to compensate for the lack of technical equipment and staff in neonatal care in Colombia [1]. Rey and Martinez introduced a program based on the following principles: (1) discharge home regardless of weight once the baby's condition is stable, thereby removing the baby from the disease-ridden hospital; (2) no artificial milk formula to be given, only mother's milk supplemented with guava juice; (3) encouragement of early bonding by nursing the baby next to the mother's body between the breasts; (4) maintenance of the baby in a head-up position.
