The market for flats in the Philippines is low due to weak demand both for import and domestic products. The position of local suppliersis aggravated by the fact that the Philippine government cancelled the 7% import duty on HRC and CRC in late June. However, theexpiration date is yet to be announced; market players expect it will be July 15 at the latest. For reference, the duty was imposed in 2004to help local flats producer Global Steel Philippines Inc. strengthen its position in the market. The decision was triggered by a statementof Filipino Galvanizers. Institute that the only producer in the country is unable to fully cover the requirements of local buyers.
