On the morning of July 22, 2013, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 struck Dingxi City in Gansu Province, a mountainous region in northwestern China. The focal mechanism of the earthquake was successive massive rock fracturing at a depth of 20 km at the mountainous junctions of the Minxian and Zhangxian areas (34.5°N, 104.2°E), about 7 km away from the township. According to a geological survey, the epicentral intensity reached 8.0°, an intensity second only to that of the Wenchuan earthquake. This earthquake was strongly felt in the Gansu area of Tianshui, Lanzhou, Longnan, and Baiyin, as well as in the surrounding provinces of Shaanxi and Sichuan. Figure 1 illustrates the general location of the Dingxi earthquake.
