I was recently browsing the autobiography of David Grandison Fairchild, The World Was My Garden: Travels of a Plant Explorer (1938). He had a long career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in its days of introducing foreign plants. Bom in Michigan, he graduated from Kansas State Agricultural College in Manhattan, Kansas in 1888, took graduate courses at the University of Iowa and at Rutgers University, worked for the Department of Agriculture for a few years, then studied in Italy, Germany, andJava.
