The epic trilogy of fights between Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali embodies what was, perhaps, the most famous rivalry in boxing history. Shaped by political and racial drama, personal betrayal, and revenge, these bouts nonetheless managed to capture the undeniable courage, pride, and determination of these two men. Beginning with an intensely hyped title fight in New York City, it would end with what may be boxing's most brutal match. Born to a middle class family in Louisville, Kentucky, Muhammad Ali began boxing at the age of 12 after a local policeman invited him to train at his gym. He became a successful amateur boxer while still in high school and won the Olympic gold medal in boxing as a light heavyweight at the age of 18 He won his first professional fight in 1960 and went on to defeat a succession of high-profile fighters. After defeating Sonny Liston in a six-round bout, Ali claimed his first heavyweight title in 1965, shouting, "I am the greatest" to the crowd when Liston stayed in his corner with a shoulder injury as the bell rang for the seventh round (17)..
