There is no denying the certification mechanism has underpinned modem sustrainable forest management (SFM) - the basis for all worthy harvesting regimes worldwide. Remaining tropical rainforests, like those that cover about 60% of Malaysia, are in better shape than they would otherwise have been. But to most end consumers, certification (independently audited or otherwise) of timber products remains a microscopic blip on their purchasing radar screen - except in a few EU countries where Green politics and powerful NGOs hold sway.
