Phil Clayton rediscovers an ancient technique to stop waterlilies closing their exquisite flowers at dusk. Few flowers are as appealing as summer waterlilies. Part of their allure is the fact that they're usually tantalisingly out of reach and must beviewed from afar, from the edge of a pool or river bank. Close up, however, they are even more glorious. I once stayed in an old Egyptian hotel on the banks of the Nile where the flowers of a tropical blue waterlily (probably Nymphaea caerulea) and a larger white one (Nymphaea lotus) filled large vases. To my surprise, the swetecent reminded me of heliotrope.
