Beneath the Virginia creeper, the leaves have already fallen in a crimson carpet; my apples, pears, quinces and grapes have all been harvested; the last roses have all but shed their faded petals, some leaving hips the size of small tomatoes, and thetrees are donning their livery of burnished gold, burgundy and bronze. The goldfinches are busily feasting on the spent lavender (I don't cut it back until early spring for this reason) and fantails (a sign of snow, I'm told, though it doesn't always follow) chatter and flit around my head as 1 sweep up leaves and cut back perennial phlox and hollyhocks, some of which have grown to three metres.
