The achievement of the J programme in supplying unfumigated organic fruit to our Japanese customers through the 2003-2005 period was a great industry success story, due to the combined efforts of organic growers and packing sheds. Growers increased their efforts to ensure their crop was as pest free as possible and the packing sheds made sure that suitable lines were targeted for Japanese inventory and ultimately export to Japan (see Table 1). There are lessons to be learned from delvinginto differences in scale management practices between conventional and organic growers. Organic growers can learn from conventional growers by ensuring that mineral oil applications for scale insect control are carried out in the pre-flowering.
