Im no fan of winter, but a bright fire and a vase of wintersweet on the mantelpiece make it bearable. Wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox) was the first shrubl planted in my Akaroa garden, more than 20 years ago, and 1 still love it to pieces. It's notparticularly showy, and for most of the year you might not even notice it, but its flowers and fragrance take the sting out of dull, dreary winter days. I can't imagine my garden without it.
