Of all the senses, smell is the most evocative. When my daughter goes into a hotel room the first thing she does is unpack a little perfumed sachet and hang it on the door knob. She works for the United States Bureau of Educational Research so she spends a lot of time flying around the States, bedding down for the night in pleasant but plain hotels. That sachet makes her room smell like home and, when she comes back after a stressful day, the fragrance helps her to relax and sleep. There are plenty of commercial air fresheners that would do the job but nothing beats nature. It's so simple to scent a room with fresh flowers that I wonder why we don't do it more often.
