Some kiwifruit growers are applying late nitrogen (N) in the belief that it will improve canopy development and fruitfulness in the subsequent season. However, research on the effects of autumn-applied N has not clearly shown that it is worthwhile, especially for kiwifruit. In a trial where we tested the effects of either an autumn (pre-harvest) or late autumn (postharvest) application of N on 'Hayward' kiwifruit vines, we found they had few impacts, with negligible effects on either fruit quality or return bloom.
