摘要

The sustainability of farming will be strongly influenced by the opinions and attitudes of farmers and orchardists to topics like farm management, the land and the environment. To gauge these, a questionnaire was posted to several hundred New Zealandfarmers and kiwifruit orchardists in 2005. This was administered from Lincoln University by the Agriculture Research Group On Sustainability (ARGOS) which is seeking to identify the determinants of sustainable agriculture (for more details visit www.argos.org.nz). The same questionnaire was used in different agricultural sectors (sheep/beef, dairy, kiwifruit and other horticulture) and covered a range of topics which were identified as potentially important for the sustainability of agriculture; some ofthese will have been less relevant for kiwifruit orchardists. Several hundred kiwifruit orchardists were sampled with responses received from about 100 GOLD, 100 GREEN, and 60 Organic orchardists. The purpose of this article is just to present some of the key descriptive findings (and to provide some feedback to those who kindly completed the questionnaire).
