摘要

Tertiary deposits are widespread in the subsurface area of East Germany (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Altmark, area of Helmstedt-Halle, Embayment of Leipzig, Lusatia). During the Palaeocene and the Miocene the deposition extends gradually in southerly and easterly directions. The recent, mainly erosive boundary of the Tertiary deposits follows an East-West line from southern Brandenburg via northern Saxonia to Sachsen-Anhalt. Three main regions are shown in the Table (STD 2002, XIV). Their formations and Schichten=subformations=members have comparable facies. They are well correlatable. The Table STD 2002 is based mainly on the "Stratigraphisches Korrelationsschema Tertiar" (Lotsch 1981), in which the entire Tertiary succession of East Germany has been systematically classified. Recent developments like the introduction of the term formation are added. The present knowledge on stratigraphy and palaeogeography in East Germany is presented in relation to the NW European Tertiary Basin.
