摘要

A direct solver (named projection-diffusion) of the 2D/3D unsteady Stokes problem is presented. The pressure operator on which it rests is very close to the Poisson operator, but no pressure Boundary condition is needed to invert it. It is applied, with a Chebyshev collocation scheme, to compute the transition to unsteadiness of Be natural-convection flow of air in a differentially heated cubic cavity (two opposite vertical faces have fixed temperature, the other ones are adiabatic). A hysteretic behavior is observed, characterized by two critical Rayleigh number values, Ra-c1 and Ra-c2, found to lie in the respective ranges [3.3, 3.5] x 10(7) and [3.1, 3.2] x 10(7). Those values are about sir times smaller than the corresponding Ra-2D,Ra-c value for the square cavity. Preliminary results are given about the pretransitional and transitional flows, their symmetry properties in particular, and some first comparisons between the 2D flow and the midplane 3D flow.
