Three decades after Ann Keen registered as a nurse in 1976 she has become the first member of the profession to become a government minister, writes Christian Duffin.Back then the idea of a nurse being a health minister would have seemed far-fetched. But now Ms Keen and her shadow, Anne Milton, will be going head to head as the parties prepare for the next general election.Ms Keen became MP for Brentford and Isle worth in west London in 1997. She joined the Commons health committee and ran a high-profile campaign to improve care for women with ovarian cancer. The Cancerbackup charity gave her its Public Figure of the Year award as a result.She has also campaigned against domestic violence and helped to introduce better training for police officers and nurses in helping victims.
