The liver is truly the body's overachiever. From synthesis to storage to regeneration, the liver quietly serves the body without many accolades. Reviewing all the functions of the liver is beyond the scope of this article, which will provide a brief overview of liver function assays. Liver structure and function The largest visceral organ in the body, the liver is located in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen under the rib cage. The liver receives a dual blood supply; about 20% of the blood flow is oxygen-rich blood from the hepatic artery, and 80% is nutrient-rich blood from the portal vein that arises from the stomach, intestines, pancreas, and spleen.
