Barriers and Strategies to the Revision Process From an Editor's Perspective

Writing for publication is challenging, time consuming, and rewarding. A current review of nursing literature reveals a number of articles encouraging nurses to write for publication. Articles range from inviting nurses to write by stressing the importance of disseminating information to identifying barriers to the writing process, ways in avoiding common pitfalls, and other practical advice (Driscoll & Driscoll, 2002; Happell, 2005, 2008b; Keen, 2007; Robinson & Rivers, 2003). Writing for publication is viewed by some as an obligation (Nelms, 2004), while others stress the importance of publishing research findings (King & Price, 2003). Despite the large number of articles detailing how to write for publication and to navigate obstacles, there has been little actual research into barriers that nurse authors encounter during the revision process from an editor's perspective. The purpose of this qualitative study, utilizing a descriptive design with content analysis, was to identify actual or perceived barriers encountered by nurse authors to the revision of manuscripts from editors' perspectives.
