Nurses are bombarded daily with patient care and system issues. That is not news. We often describe our physical and mental exhaustion at the end of the day and how we revitalize ourselves to meet the next day with renewed energy and interest. We do our best and most times produce great outcomes for patients and each other. And when we step back and look at what we have done and are doing, we are aware that we are the glue holding health care together wherever it is delivered. What we are not doing, however, is taking time to critically think about what is next for nursing and how we need to prepare ourselves now for what lies ahead. We are so busy running on the daily treadmill that we do not stop to think about what newer treadmills there are or if we should still be using treadmills.
