When you stand on the windswept peaks overlooking Castle Hill Station, wedged between the Craigieburn and Torlesse Ranges in the Southern Alps, you appreciate just how far former Aucklander Christine Fernyhough has come from her comfortable Parnell life. The view takes in rolling tussock flats and the strange, castle-like limestone rocks that have made the area famous, then sweeps on to a succession of jagged snow-capped peaks. It's three years since she bought this 4000-hectare historic high countrystation after the death of her husband John, but Christine still has days when she has to pinch herself to make sure it's real. With a woolly hat pulled down over her head, she points out the wide sweep of her property - on both sides of State Highway 73 - and confesses that she had a lot to learn about farming when she arrived at Castle Hill in 2004.
