The alchemy of innovation:how to leverage research How can we better leverage our research and turn innovation into a powerful competitive strength? A few countries consistently ranked among the top innovators offer some ideas.Such as catalytic rather than controlling government interventions,in an attempt to create a virtuous ecosystem,patent royalties that flow to both the inventors and their institutions,independent universities,a rigorous project selection,professionally run transfer structures,access to multiple sources of financing,the sometimes seminal role of venture capital,and overall,an open modus operandi privileging networks,clusters,cross-fertilization between disciplines,defense,the private sector and academic research.All of this made easy by pragmatic cultures valuing risk and easy on failure.Basic research and applied research are both valued,with a focus on facilitating the transfer"from the tree to its fruits".
