Results are given from a study of 324 laboratory animals at the Laboratory Center of the National University of Singapore (100 specific-pathogen-free rats, 150 mice, 37 hamsters and 37 rabbits, ages ranging from 3 weeks to 30 months). Faecal sampleswere inoculated into Jones' serum and incubated at 37鳦. If Blastocystis sp. was not identified by day 6, the sample was considered negative. Blastocystis sp. was found not to infect mice, hamsters or rabbits, but 60% of the rats were culture-positive.There was no morphological difference between Blastocystis sp. from various strains of rats. The majority of the cells were 14-16 鎚 in diameter and round to ovoid, and in some cases granular and cystic forms without a fibrillar layer were present. All 4morphological (vacuolar, granular, amoeboid, and cystic) forms were present in the cultures, and cysts similar to B. hominis were also observed. It is concluded that Blastocystis sp. infects rats, the prevalence being higher in Wistar and Sprague Dawleythan in other strains.
