Myocardial calcification, also known as dystrophic cardiac calcinosis (DCC), is a frequent finding (90 to 100% Incidence) in certain inbred mouse strains and has also been described in guinea pigs and rats (1). Inbred mouse strains with a high incidence of DGG include DBA/2, C3H, BALB/c, C, A, CBA, and CHI (2-4). Dystrophic cardiac calcification typically is an incidental finding at necropsy in certain inbred mouse strains and usually does not cause clinical disease or death (5). Occasionally, congestive heart failure has been seen in mice with severe cardiac lesions (6). The distribution of cardiac lesions associated with DCC varies among strains, with epicardial localization in BALB/c mice, myocardial involvement in C3H and C3Hf mice, and epicardial and myocardial lesions in DBA/2 mice (5). Previous reports have implicated myocardial necrosis, which progresses to fibrocalcific masses, in the patho-genesis of DCC (2, 6, 7).
